Safety and identification

UniMeterRadio is highly universal system mainly in programm equipment of radio modules. It is able to define activity and behaviors against technological environment directly through the radio communication, it is too able to change practically completly own internal programm (that is radio communication characteristics too) directly through the radio.
We don't wan retreat from universality of UniMeterRádio modules, which is mainly provided by possibility of "field-update" and which granted to us affirmation, that we are very good prepared for future zhanges in meter's environment. In the same time, from starting point "radio environment is fully open", it is evident, that we must very carefully solved questions security and identification.
Universality, on one side excelent, highly usefull value, is on the other side path to potential risks. Most safe system is always system, provided one, strictly defined function. Any programmable system, namely system remote programmable through the open communication environment kýkoľvek (like a UniMeterRadio), must have protection against non-authorised interferences.
If we simly say: "We have radio communication device, which is able self-reprogramming through the radio", we must simultanously thing about all troubles, which can happen.

So:

  1. I have device with remote radio communication.
    • Advantage: - I dont need direct access to device, I am not depend on "rats-eated" cables
    • Danger: - with my device can communicate somebody else, and I don't like it
  2. My device is able to mediate service(set-up) communication with attached technology (meter, ...)
    • Advantage: - (like upper note), I'm not depended on keys, I don't must disturb anybody and enter private areas
    • Danger: - it can happen, that somebody with the appropriate radio devices non-authorise set-up attached device, and that will go work wrong, or not at all.
  3. My device is able through radio request switch/select any from pre-setted regimes of its own communication, with technology, and with radio too.
    • Advantage: - I can standartly use simple, normall form of communication (readings), but i have possibility in some cases obtain another details ( for example archive files form meter, or generating own records by automatical pre-programmed readings (time intervals defined by radio) with batch transfer all reacords in future, resp. possibility switch from system request-answer to system auto-transmitt in definable intervals)
    • Danger: - what happens, if somebody switch my radio modul to working form, which will unpleasantly often disturb attached technology, or causes high consumption of power source (battery exhaustion)
  4. My device offer possibility change/redefine/reprogramm through the radio the configuration, which define communication reqimes with technology, an with radio too.
    • Advantage: - when occures some changes, (f.e. in requirements of reading values, resp. connection with another meter/technology, it's only needed redefination of configuration and send it through the radio to module, I must not buy new module, or completly change all radio communication equipment to another.
    • Danger: - but what if somebody reprogramm configuration in manner, that modul will be non-functional, or bad functional, and I shall to reprogramm it
  5. My device offer possibility not only change configuration of universal firmware, it is possible completly change firmware alone !
    • Advantage: - almost absolutely insurance, that if occures changes in technology, I am able "hold the step", if it (sufficienty universal) hardware interface allows, equally if occurs changes in regulations of radio devices, I am able to adaptate, and I haven't to put to trash my existing devices.
    • Danger: - alike a upper, more with possibility to kill "field update" correction, only by dismounting and servicing by manufacturer.

It's a lot of to emphasize again - it is needing to very intensive solving the questions "safety a nd identification" here !

UniMeterRadio system was from beggining developed with full taking to notice of possible security risks, and have solutions to minimalize or to full elimination of noted risks.

Basic question is: Why is needed remote "field update", it is enough device reprogramming (, if it will sometime needed) through the connector a all is done.

Answer: Some parts from noted risks is not valid only for remote update, in the same manner is valid for update through the wired connection. On other side for some risks is enough radio communication alone, nad when it is neccessary eliminte so risks, it is possible do one more step and use radio communication advantages to "field update". When we want have remote communication for reasons: not walk repeatedly to canals and hard accessable places, why we'll must do it, when we need enlarge reading values range (or change identification number, or radio freqency channel)?

And other thing - when we for mechanical protection of measuring (, or other by radio communicating) system do some precautions with "vandal proof" and "strong chain with lock", we must overcome locks too, when we need device "update" - and it can be hard, even when we have the key.
And if we don't want to change anything.... ....naturaly it is absolutely no problem "burn hard aplication" ........., and very propably some special using of UniMeterRadio modulov will require it, ...we can strictly say that it is simplier specialities and improvements like a "remote field update" and "remote configuration" remove from products on request, then ask it there, where not exists.
